Construction on the new Publix shopping center in the former Jonquil Plaza in Smyrna is expected to begin “very soon,” City Administrator Mike Jones announced Monday during the Smyrna City Council meeting.
Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Teri Anulewicz said the demolished shopping center site at Atlanta and Spring roads had been dormant for eight years, but now the new shopping center should be open within the next year to two.
In a related action, the council voted 7-0 to exchange city property at 2925 and 2975 Atlanta Road to Halpern Enterprises, developer of the former Jonquil Plaza property on nearly 12 acres at 2995 Atlanta Road, for 2552 South Cobb Drive at the Smyrna Grove project from Halpern.
