The covered arena at Jim R. Miller Park will have pieces of acoustical dampening material removed since they have been falling occasionally.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved on Oct. 8 a contract with W.E. Contracting Company, Inc. for $126,657 to remove this material at the park, 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta.

Funding will come from the 2016 PARKS Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax Program.

Constructed in the late 1990s, the covered arena is used for a wide variety of events from rodeos to car shows to musical concerts.

Shortly after construction, a spray-on foam was applied to the inside of the roof and vertical posts of the open-sided metal structure, said Cobb PARKS Director Jimmy Gisi.

This application decreased the echo and sound reverberation in the arena which had been distracting for performers and audience members, he said.

More recently, however, Gisi said the foam increasingly falls from the roof to the arena floor and seating area.

Free of asbestos, the remainder of this material must be removed, he added.

Other means of dampening the sound of echo conditions are being considered for the future, he said.

Gisi noted that major improvements have been completed and/or are currently under construction at the park.

“These improvements will greatly increase the scale and types of revenue-generating events that can be hosted there,” Gisi said.
