Decatur’s city commission denied developer Jay Weaver’s proposal to subdivide a half acre, now part of an Oakhurst dog park, for building two homes. This came Monday night, nearly a week after the city’s planning commission also chose to deny Weaver’s project.
“I’ve always been a protector of personal property rights,” said Mayor Jim Baskett. “But I don’t believe subdividing that property is good for the general welfare of our community.”
Weaver is still under contract to purchase about one-third of the dog park from the Samuel L. Jones Boys & Girls Club. He also believes, regardless of the commission’s denial, he can build both homes because the land’s been zoned residential since 1940.
But late Monday Weaver said he wasn’t sure about his next step, though he believes the Jones Club will decide whether or not to sell by the end of next week.
