Beginning March 12, Cherokee County parents of incoming kindergartners can skip filling out traditional paper forms in a school office and register their youngsters online, school district officials announced.

In a process that takes about 15 to 20 minutes, parents enter information such as emergency contact names and numbers at a "Registration Gateway" at www.cherokeek12.net. They will be asked to set up an appointment at school for them and their child.

Required documents, such as birth certificates and proof of residency, can be scanned and uploaded from home or brought to the appointment. At that time, the documents will be verified by the front office, and the child will be assessed to gauge his or her kindergarten readiness.

The Registration Gateway will be open March 12-31 for parents of children born on or before Sept. 1, 2013, who will begin kindergarten in the 2018-19 school year; and youngsters starting school for the first time, born on or before Sept. 1, 2012, and ready to enter first grade. Additional systems are to go online this spring for registering Pre-K students and students new to the Cherokee schools in any grade, officials said. The dreaded “first day forms” for all students will be replaced with an online process this summer for the new school year, officials said.
