The last day of school in Cherokee County will be May 8, and teachers will work with students who need help through May 22, when final grades will be issued.
As for high school graduations, if social distancing guidelines have changed by July 1 to allow traditional ceremonies, they could be scheduled at that time; but if not, virtual commencements would take their place, the Cherokee County School Board decided Thursday evening.
The board approved the abbreviated calendar proposed by Superintendent Brian V. Hightower. Ordinarily, the school year in Cherokee County would have ended May 28.
But this year’s session was shortened because of the COVID-19 pandemic that shuttered buildings; forced students, teachers and parents into online learning; and prompted Gov. Brian Kemp to order schools to remain closed for the rest of the academic year.
