The Cherokee County School Board has approved its 2020 Legislative Partnership Priorities that reaffirms its opposition to using state tax dollars for private school and home school vouchers.

The priorities list, delivered to the Cherokee County legislative delegation, also opposes reducing Teacher Retirement System benefits for future educators.

Among other priorities, the school district calls for strengthening local control and management of schools, including the school board’s authority to set its own calendar and schedule recess; and, for safety reasons, opposes the use of schools as polling places during the regular school day.

The district also asks the Legislature to consider modifying and updating the QBE (Quality Basic Education) funding formula “to accurately reflect inflation (and) true costs of transportation,” and to give weight to economically disadvantaged students, fund safety and security initiatives, and increase allocations for counselors, social workers, psychologists and nurses.
