To add another layer of security to eight elementary schools, the Cherokee County School Board has approved a $235,000 low bid for the construction of security foyers at the schools.

Womack, Lewis & Smith was the low bidder for the work at Arnold Mill, Ball Ground, Canton, Carmel, Holly Springs, Liberty, Little River and R.M. Moore elementary schools.

The schools already have “buzz-in” electronic front-door systems, a schools spokeswoman said. With the new foyers, visitors who are buzzed in will go to the front office to processed, following district safety protocols, before being allowed into the main hallway of the school.

The new foyers represent the first phase of a three-phase initiative to retrofit existing schools with security foyers; new construction, such as Dean Rusk Middle School, opening in August to replace an existing school by that name, will come with such features, the spokeswoman said.
