The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved an intergovernmental agreement to lease a fire station owned by the city of Nelson.

“Cherokee County volunteers will provide fire support from the volunteer fire station formerly operated by the Ball Ground Volunteer Fire Department corporation,” according to a memo to commissioners from Chief Tim Prather of Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services.

“This intergovernmental lease agreement will allow county personnel to officially operate from this fire station,” Prather said.

Nelson contracts with the county for fire protection services. Under the agreement, the county will pay $1 a year to lease the station and its 0.84-acre site at 89 Dogwood Pass for one year beginning May 1, with an automatic renewal for five successive one-year terms.
