Cherokee County has retained an engineering consultant to study six miles of Bells Ferry Road to determine the need for capacity and intersection improvements.

The county Board of Commissioners awarded a $33,950 contract to Wilburn Engineering, whose proposal scored the highest of 11 received for the Bells Ferry Road Corridor Traffic Study. The consultant will evaluate Bells Ferry from the Lake Allatoona bridge to Marietta Highway.

The road, in the western part of the county, handles both commuter and local traffic and has seen traffic increase over the last two decades due to residential and commercial growth, staff said in a report to commissioners.

“The consultant will evaluate the corridor, its major intersections and bottlenecks to determine the need for short-term and mid-term safety and capacity improvements” that could be done within the next five years, staff said. “The consultant also will evaluate any right-of-way needs necessary for those improvements.”
