The Chamblee Police Department invites students age 13 – 15 years old to register for the inaugural Junior Police Academy, which will take place Monday, June 4 - Friday, June 8.
The Academy will teach students about the Police Department and encourages a positive relationship between Chamblee youth and law enforcement. Classes include lessons on the criminal justice system, 911 communications, fingerprinting, traffic enforcement and safety, crime prevention, self-defense, K-9 demonstration, criminal investigation and crime scene processing and tours of the Chamblee Police Department and DeKalb County Jail. The week will culminate with a graduation ceremony, where parents are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of their students.
“This program will give local youth exposure into what it is like to be an officer, work in public safety or in the judicial system. It also will be a great experience for them to work hand in hand with our police officers. We hope this program will continue to grow for years to come,” says Chamblee Police Chief Donny Williams.
Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Chamblee Police department, 3518 Broad Street, Chamblee. Lunch will be provided each day.
The program is open to students who live or go to school in the city of Chamblee. There is no fee to attend, but each student is required to get a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, principal or clergy member, and due to limited space, applications will be selected based upon a first come, first served basis. Applications are available at www.chambleega.com/DocumentCenter/View/2270/Jr-Academy-Application-Packet. The deadline for submission is May 25.
