The Canton City Council has awarded two contracts valued at more than $5.1 million total to extend the Etowah River Trail.

The council approved a $1.6 million contract to A1 Contracting LLC to extend the trail from just east of I-575 to Doss Road; and a $3.5 million contract to Lewallen Construction Co. Inc. for an extension from Etowah River Park to just east of I-575.

A1 Contracting, which submitted the lowest of four bids, is tasked with constructing about 3,700 linear feet of concrete trail, 250 linear feet of elevated concrete boardwalk, 2,800 linear feet of natural surface trails, storm drainage and a gazebo, Development Services Manager Bethany Watson said in a memo to the council.

Lewallen submitted the second-lowest of four bids for the other trail extension, but the lowest bid was incomplete and rejected by city staff, Watson said. Lewallen will construct about 4,825 linear feet of concrete trail, 725 linear feet of elevated concrete boardwalk, and storm drainage.
