The Canton City Council voted 6-1 Thursday night to enact a 120-day moratorium banning alteration of any building 50 years or older until the city’s Historic Preservation Commission is fully operational.

City Manager Billy Peppers explained that the moratorium is designed to avoid a rush by property owners to make changes or demolish buildings. He said that calling a halt would give the commission established last year time to establish boundaries of a historic preservation district.

The move was requested by Cherokee County Historical Society Executive Director Stephanie Joyner and was sparked by Cherokee County’s recent demolition of the old water and sewerage authority building, although an official pointed out that the Canton ordinance exempts government properties.
