Beginning Jan. 10, the bridge that carries Thompson Mill Road over Interstate 985 in Buford will close to traffic for up to 21 days.

This closure will allow repairs to the bridge’s substructure that was damaged by an over height load. Thompson Mill Road drivers will be detoured by way of State Route 13/Atlanta Highway.

I-985 southbound traffic will also be affected by these repairs as both lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, Jan. 12 and 13, between State Route 20 and State Route 347.

During this closure, traffic on I-985 southbound will be detoured by way of State Route 347, State Route 13, and State Route 20. Drivers will see electronic message boards indicating they must exit the interstate.

For the daytime hours, I-985 southbound will be open but restricted to one lane between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Jan. 12 and 13.

After the initial weekend of work, nightly lane closures for the interstate will be allowed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

L.C. Whitford of Alpharetta will be completing the bridge repairs.

Drivers are advised to know before they go and use their favorite wayfinding app to avoid this area during the weekend of Jan. 11.
