Hayley Dianne Fowler, a Mill Creek High student who took technical education courses at Maxwell High School of  Technology, will compete at the Health Occupations Student Organization (HOSA) National Leadership Conference in California later this month. The Gwinnett County student finished second at the Georgia HOSA competition, competing in the physical therapy category. Dr. Jade Gillispie was Hayley's teacher in the healthcare science program at Maxwell Tech.

Ten scholarships totaling $50,000 have been pledged to the Gwinnett Tech Foundation by the Gwinnett Federal Credit Union over the next 10 years. The gift comes in celebration of the credit union's 50th anniversary and honors its relationship as the school's credit union. Gwinnett Tech is one the nation's fastest-growing two-year colleges.

Atlanta native Jarett Gerald has landed the prestigious NASCAR diversity internship in New York City. Gerald, 21,  will graduate in August from the University of South Carolina. He received a four-year track scholarship to the school.  The 2008 Eagle's Landing High School graduate will work in New York for two months this summer.  Hundreds of students apply for the internship each year and 18 were accepted. The program exposes students to NASCAR and sports business leaders.

Brenda Nguyen of the University of Georgia and Rena Ow of Oxford College of Emory University  are among 84 students across the country selected to take part in the Summer Medical and Research Training Program (SMART) at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. The nine-week employment/educational program is for students interested in exploring  scientific research careers.  Undergraduate students are paired with BCM mentors to conduct biomedical research in a broad range of areas. Brenda is a 2008 graduate of Tucker High School. Rena graduated from The Lovett School in 2009.

Six students from Chattahoochee Technical College, along with instructor Mike O'Rear, will install medical instrumentation on a bus that will be shipped to Ghana for use as a mobile medical unit.  Health care workers there will use the equipment and facility to check for hypertension and diabetes in patients while information is transferred back to doctors at Emory University Medical School via a GPS.
