Citing a desire to bring larger family-friendly events to the area, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved $64,500 from the Recreation Project Contingency Fund to host a hot-air balloon festival in June. The action was approved at the Feb. 25 commission meeting.

The county will contract with a company to bring five tethered balloons to McCurry Park on June 11 as part of Balloons Over Fayette, which will include rides, food and craft vendors, and children’s activities. The county organizers said they expect about 1,250 attendees.

Expenses would be offset by anticipated revenue of about $24,000.
