Avondale Estates commissioners will discuss the future of annexation during a work session 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Avondale Estates City Hall, 21 North Avondale Plaza.

“We have to re-evaluate, to talk about whether it financially makes sense,” said Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager, who spearheaded the city’s annexation movement as interim mayor from October to March.

Late in this year’s General Assembly, the Senate approved Avondale’s annexation but removed commercial districts Rio Circle and the DeKalb Farmer’s Market before returning the bill to a House committee where it now sits until next year. The ability of both Avondale and Decatur securing sponsorships for their annexation bills may depend on whether Tucker and LaVista Hills’ cityhood bills are approved by voters in November.

“I believe,” Giager said, “we need to make a plan now rather than waiting and seeing what happens in November.”
