The Austell City Council voted 6-0 Monday to buy a vacant corner lot on Pine Street NW for $2,500 to develop into a park.

Councilman Scott Thomas said that section is “a high-crime area.”

Agreeing, Randy Bowens, the city’s director of the Public Works Department, said it would be good to purchase the property “to stop the riff-raff” if it can be converted into a park.

“We might be able to own another three houses to expand the park,” Mayor Joe Jerkins said during the pre-agenda meeting on Nov. 24 about other vacant houses in that area.
