Austell could have a quiet railroad zone through its downtown amid other improvements.

The Austell City Council voted on Feb. 3 to apply to the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) for another Livable Center Initiative (LCI) study.

If the LCI study is approved by the ARC, then Austell will hire a consultant and hold town hall meetings before applying to the ARC for more grants that could be as much as $250,000 for downtown improvements.

Additional grant applications could assist the city in establishing a quiet railroad zone in the downtown, said Jim Graham, director of Austell’s Community Affairs and Parks Departments.

Graham said the city held town hall meetings 15 to 20 years ago when grant applications resulted in improved lighting and landscaping in the downtown district.

Grants mean 80 percent would be paid by the state and 20 percent by the city, Graham added.
