The Atlanta City Council has authorized a $1.25 million task order to monitor and maintain four city-owned landfills.

The Department of Public Works requires architectural and engineering services for “post-closure care and maintenance” of the landfills, according to a resolution approved by the Council on Monday.

Arcadis/BPA, a joint venture of Arcadis G&M Inc. and Brindley Pieters & Associates Inc., will care for the Key Road, Cascade Road, Gun Club Road and East Confederate Avenue landfills. Its contract runs through November 2018.

The joint venture will monitor groundwater and surface water; do preventative, unscheduled and emergency maintenance, as needed; maintain the flares that burn off waste gas, and perform other tasks. City crews will be responsible for such things as monthly inspections and methane gas monitoring.

Georgia Environmental Protection Division regulations require that the city perform the post-closure care for at least 30 years.
