Atlanta is moving toward awarding two contracts potentially worth more than $1.1 million to prepare and deliver free meals to city schoolchildren this summer.
The Atlanta Public Schools and Sodexo Inc. would be awarded a contract not to exceed $850,000 to prepare the food, and Real Bizness Solutions LLC would get up to $300,000 to deliver it.
The Atlanta Summer Food Service Program expects to provide 122,405 breakfasts and 133,784 lunches to children in low-income communities at 61 sites in Atlanta from June 6 to July 29, according to resolutions moved by City Council Member Kwanza Hall on this week’s Community Development & Human Resources Committee agenda.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture-backed program provides children in low-income neighborhoods with nutritious meals during summer vacation, when they no longer receive school breakfasts or lunches. It is administered in Georgia by Bright From the Start, an agency of the state Department of Early Care and Learning. The city is to be reimbursed by Bright From the Start.
