The Alpharetta City Council has given staff the go-ahead to apply for a $1 million grant from the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Program of the state Department of Natural Resources for a streambank restoration project in Wills Park.
Staff recommended that the city commit the $283,588 already in the capital budget for the project as its local match for the funding. That’s 28 percent of the total estimated project cost, though the grant program requires only a 25 percent match.
“The grant will be evaluated on a points system,” staff said in a report to the council. “Any additional funding above the required match will assist in more calculated points.”
Georgia voters authorized the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Act in 2018. The program dedicates 40 percent of sales and use taxes on outdoor sporting goods to stewardship projects at existing state and local parks; the development of new parks; and the acquisition of land as wildlife habitat and to ensure clean water supplies, staff said.
