Hotel and motel guests in Alpharetta will be paying more to lay their heads on the pillow.

The Alpharetta City Council on Monday night voted 6-1 on a 3-cent hotel/motel tax increase, bringing it to 8 pennies on the dollar. The increase goes into effect Oct. 1 and is expected to raise about $1.5 million annually.

Assistant City Manager James Drinkard said the money will be put to two uses. It will pay the city’s portion of the planned conference center and hotel project, for which a master developer agreement was approved last week. The city is on the hook for $29.4 million of the $107 million project, and will use tax proceeds to pay back the planned issuance of revenue bonds.

Drinkard said the tax revenue also will support the city’s destination marketing efforts.
