The Alpharetta City Council on Monday, Sept 21, voted to accept Fulton County’s donation of the old Alpharetta branch library amid talk that it could become an arts center.
The former branch at 238 Canton Street was shut down earlier this year when Fulton County moved Alpharetta operations to a new building next door to City Hall. Alpharetta had donated 3 acres of land for the updated facility, and now gains control of the vacated building, plus 3 acres.
At an open house Monday night, talk centered around making the building a city-owned and operated arts facility with gallery and teaching space. A second open house is set at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at City Hall, 2 Park Plaza.
Also Monday night, the council approved, on first reading, updated impact fees for developers of homes and commercial buildings. Total fees charged to developers building dwelling units (including single-family homes and apartments) would go from $2,000 to nearly $7,000 per unit. Most fee categories wouldn’t rise significantly, but developers would see a nearly tenfold increase in impact fees charged for park and recreation development and services.
