The Art of Community, a consultant group, presented a first draft of Decatur’s Community Action Plan before nearly 200 people in the Marriott Courtyard ballroom Thursday night.

The plan consists of 71 “action points,” tackling community differences ranging from culture, to race, age, politics and economic resources, among others. These produced three predominant themes: affordable housing, keeping seniors in their homes, and creating an affordable environment for young people to live after college graduation.

“This city, historically, has had a consistent focus on diversity,” said Mattice Haynes, The Art of Community’s chief inclusion officer, who led Thursday’s session. “You can see that focus in [Decatur’s] 2000 strategic plan and again in the 2010 strategic plan.”

The AOC held a series of meetings or “leadership circles” beginning last November, and Thursday was the final public forum. The consultants will give a formal presentation of the draft during a city commission work session 6:30 p.m. Monday at the City Commission Meeting Room, 509 N. McDonough St., Decatur.

Haynes said the final draft is scheduled for an unveiling during the commission’s Dec. 7 meeting.
