Emergency personnel responded to Melbourne Beach Monday on a report of a 10-year-old girl with a serious gash on her leg after possibly being bitten by a shark, Brevard County spokesman Don Walker said.
The incident was reported at about 4:45 p.m. in the 9000 block of A1A in Melbourne Beach.
Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found the girl with a 6-inch laceration on her left calf, Walker said.
She was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando for treatment of the injury, he said.
While there were no witnesses, the injury is indicative of a shark bite, Walker said.
The beach was cleared until officials determined there was no evidence of sharks in the water.
No other details were immediately released.
