The Georgia House on Monday approved a resolution that would promise those teachers who earned certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards would again receive a pay supplement.

The 10 percent salary boost would apply only to those 2,000-plus teachers who had earned the certification by last year, when the General Assembly passed a budget that eliminated the supplement. Educators had to complete a three-year training program to earn the certification.

"This isn't something you get by sending away box tops," said the bill's sponsor, Rep. Earl Ehrhart, R-Powder Springs. "These are some of the best teachers in the state, in the country."

Those teachers shouldn't expect to see fatter paychecks anytime soon, though. House Resolution 248, which passed 163-2, only promises an intent for the state to fund the supplements when the money is available in future budgets.
