Recently-deposed Clayton County Police Chief Greg Porter said Wednesday he had “a change of heart” and has assumed his new role as head of the county’s 911 operation rather than retire.

Porter was removed from his job as police chief June 29 and reassigned as the director of Clayton e911 operation despite community opposition to Porter's removal. Porter had initially said he would rather retire than take on the new job. But he later changed his mind when he learned it could financially impact his retirement. He plans to retire in 13 months. Porter will continue to get the same pay and benefits - about $154,000 - in his new job.

Porter contends his removal as Clayton’s top law enforcer was retaliation for his complaints last year against Board of Commission Chairman Jeff Turner.

“I’m committed to the residents of Clayton. I would have preferred to serve the community as police chief my last 13 months. However that’s not the case at this point,” said Porter who assumed the 911 post on July 6.”I still think removing me as police chief was a disservice to the community however I will continue to be committed, dedicated and professional.”
