Gwinnett expands Fort Daniel historic site

Jan 20, 2016

Gwinnett County will expand the Fort Daniel historic site near Buford under a measure approved by the Board of Commissioners.

On Tuesday commissioners agreed to spend $285,000 to buy 5.4 acres of property adjoining the Fort Daniel site. The county already owns 4.3 acres at the Braselton Highway site.

Local archaeologists and historians discovered the original location of the fort in 2009. Gwinnett later bought the site for $241,000 and leased it to the Fort Daniel Foundation, which maintains and operates it as a permanent archaeological research preserve and educational site.

Maj. Gen. Allen Daniel commanded the 4th Division of Georgia’s militia and helped build the fort a few years before Gwinnett became a county in 1818. Historians believe the fort displaced or refurbished a 1790s frontier fort at the same location.
