Raw sewage is still overflowing in hundreds of spills annually in the city of Atlanta and DeKalb County, despite years of work and billions of dollars invested in repairs.
But both Atlanta and DeKalb are making progress. Though both governments' sewage systems aren't fixed yet, they're reporting fewer spills than a few years ago.
Atlanta is continuing $4 billion worth of infrastructure upgrades that are scheduled for completion in 2027. DeKalb’s projects are costing more than $1.3 billion and will be finished in 2020.
Sewage mishaps declined 57 percent across metro Atlanta from 2001 to 2014, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission.
