Gwinnett County residents have voted to continue a penny-per-dollar sales tax expected to raise nearly $1 billion to fund school improvement projects in the county and the Buford city school districts.

With votes counted in nearly all election precincts, about three out of four residents voted to extend the tax.

The extension means Gwinnett will collect money from the tax for the school districts through 2022. The current Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax expires in June 2017. Gwinnett, the state’s largest school district, expects to collect $928 million from the sales tax. The Buford city school districts projects it will get $22 million from the tax.

The districts plan to use the money to build new schools, repair and renovate existing schools and for technology improvements.
