Amanda Miliner, a fourth-grade teacher in Houston County, was named the 2015 Georgia Teacher of the Year on Friday, beating out nine finalists.

Miliner, who teaches at Miller Elementary, will receive a collection of prizes, including $5,000 from the Georgia Federation for Public Education and $2,500 from the Professional Association of Georgia educators. She will also be Georgia’s representative in the National Teacher of the Year competition organized by the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The 2015 national teacher of the year will be announced next year.

Miliner has represented Georgia before in a national competition. She was Miss Georgia in 2006 and Miss Georgia USA in 2008. Miliner was the second runner up in the Miss America competition in 2007 and the runner up in the Miss USA competition in 2008.

Miliner and teachers of the year from all school districts in the state were feted during a luncheon at the Georgia International Convention Center.

Five of the 10 finalists for Georgia Teacher of the Year teach in metro Atlanta schools.

Those five were Rita L. Simmons of Atlanta Public Schools, Rhonda Lokey of Cobb County, Lyn Schenbeck of Coweta County, Nick C. Crowder of Forsyth County and Hyunjin Son of Gwinnett County.
