Carlton Brown, president of Clark Atlanta University, will retire next year after six years at the helm of the historically black college.
Brown’s retirement, announced this week, is effective June 30, 2015.
“This is the natural progression in the life of an institution, certainly in the life of a university president,” Brown said in a letter to the college’s board of trustees. A formal search for the university’s next president will be announced later this year.
Brown was named CAU president in 2008, after serving a year as the university’s executive vice-president and provost. He also served as president of Savannah State University for almost a decade, and held several leadership positions at Hampton University.
During his time at CAU, Brown formed new international academic partnerships with three foreign countries, increased the university’s research and fundraising efforts and strengthened internal audit and compliance protocols.
CAU was created in 1988 when Atlanta University — the nation’s first black graduate school— and Clark College — the first black private, liberal arts college — combined. CAU, along with Spelman and Morehouse colleges and the Morehouse School of Medicine, now make up the Atlanta University Center consortium of private colleges.
The university celebrated its 25th anniversary last month.
