The Cherokee County School Board appointed a new board chairwoman Wednesday after the resignation of Jane Read, and approved its 2015-16 budget, which aims to lower class sizes.

Board member Kyla Cromer was selected by the board from a pool of two applicants to fill Read’s unexpired term through 2016. Read resigned last month as a requirement of her new employer.

Cromer’s seat is now vacant, and the board will advertise for applications to fill it.

The board unanimously approved the the superintendent’s recommended 2015-16 budget of $553 million, which includes a $363 million general fund for day-to-day operations, as well as budgets for school construction and other areas.

The budget includes money to hire more teachers to decrease class sizes in middle schools and high schools following the same measure last school year in elementary schools, expanding the school nurse program and installing an entry-door security system at all elementary and middle schools.

It did not raise the millage rate.
