Cherokee County students worked during the holiday season to help the needy. Projects included the Giving Tree at Bascomb Elementary School, where students and staff donated gifts to fulfill the wish lists of students whose families are struggling financially. Holly Springs Elementary School STEM Academy students and staff participated in a holiday canned food drive for MUST Ministries organized by Malynda Wehunt, the school's cafeteria manager and president of the Cherokee County School Nutrition Association. Wehunt, along with school nutrition managers throughout the school district, is leading three food drives this school year, with deliveries in November, December and March. Liberty Elementary School's third-grade AIM gifted program students also led a holiday food drive for MUST Ministries and collected enough to feed 50 families. Students, parents and school personnel also traveled to MUST's distribution site at New Life Church to deliver their donations and pack food boxes for families. Carmel Elementary School's fourth grade organized a holiday season food drive, and students collected more than 886 pounds of non-perishable food to distribute to local families in need.
