Atlanta school superintendent Meria Carstarphen is keeping the district on the right track, Atlanta school board chair Courtney English said Monday night after the board's formal evaluation of her performance.
The board conducted its evaluation of Carstarphen behind closed doors, the practice for most Georgia school districts. After the private evaluation, English summarized the board's assessment of her publicly.
"Dr. Carstarphen has kept the district on a path towards meeting and exceeding the board's expectations," English said.
Carstarphen was hired in the spring of 2014.
English credited Carstarphen with a long list of accomplishments, including "setting the stage" for improvement in student achievement; introducing in schools new lessons on building healthy relationships and managing emotions; and improving the district's long-term budgeting process.
