An Atlanta middle school has been authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School.

Atlanta Public Schools announced Tuesday that Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School has received the designation, allowing students to receive the kind of specialized instruction offered at Maynard Jackson High School. The middle school feeds into the high school, which already offers an International Baccalaureate diploma.

The district plans to expand the IB program to include all elementary schools that feed into the middle and high schools.

The program focuses on critical and independent thinking skills.

Schools must complete an authorization process in order to offer the program. More than 5,000 schools are teaching the program, according to the nonprofit organization that authorizes schools.
