Most parents assume elementary school is the easy part. They expect it will get much harder for their kids in middle and high school.
But in some districts in Georgia, including Atlanta, Bibb and DeKalb, elementary schools are the weakest link — at least in terms of academic performance as judged by the state’s College and Career Ready Performance Index.
And those low ratings mean there are more elementary schools eligible for state takeover in APS and DeKalb than middle or high schools.
In fact, APS Superintendent Meria Carstarphen says her middle and high schools are performing “miracles” in view of the under preparation of the students coming out of the elementary schools.
