Whether walking among the opulence of Canal Street or merely watching the excitement from afar, Fat Tuesday is fixated on the minds and hearts of millions today.

The official Fat Tuesday parade ensued at lunchtime Tuesday, which marks one of the most significant days of the two-week Mardi Gras celebration. In fact, Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday.” The day is also referred to as Shrove Tuesday, Carnival Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday, depending on where you’re celebrating. Thousands of people are set to line the streets, dressed in the Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold, standing or sitting in lawn chairs, eating food and talking among themselves during the big day. The carnival season began Jan. 6, and Fat Tuesday marks the culmination of the season’s balls, parades and festivities.
