Scituate Animal Shelter volunteers are frustrated after finding two cat carriers dumped on the side of the road nearby this past week – though only one had a cat in it.
Workers say the first one was empty when they found it, but they say there was likely a cat inside of it when it was dumped.
The second was found with a small, black cat named Binx inside.
“He’s a remarkable cat. Very friendly, sweet. Very lovable, obviously wants to be in a home,” Scituate Animal Shelter Director Maryann Regan said.
Binx was in terrible condition inside a filthy carrier on the side of the road when he was found.
Regan said he might have been there for days.
“The carrier was completely defecated, filled with feces, filled with urine. The cat inside had urine burns on his paws,” she explained.
This was the second time in a matter of days someone abandoned a cat near the shelter.
Surveillance video from Monday, March 27, shows a car pass by the animal shelter and a cat carrier tossed from the back door. The car never stopped.
“There was no cat in it, but there was evidence there probably was a cat in there recently,” said Regan. “There was food, fur. The cat could’ve escaped.”
According to Massachusetts law, abandoning a pet is punishable by jail time and up to a $5,000 fine.
But it doesn’t cost a penny to bring a pet to the Scituate Animal Shelter.
“We are judgment-free. We want you here. We want your pet. If it doesn’t work out, that’s O.K. We will find another home for your animal…that will be the right match for the animal,” Regan said.
Binx is expected to make a full recovery and be fine and we’re told he’s already been adopted.
