Despite the torrential rains that soaked North Carolina this weekend because of Florence -- now a tropical depression -- Antonio Barnes and Denise Thompson went ahead with their wedding in Durham on Saturday, WTVD reported.

The couple were married at the Durham Armory and held their reception at the Marriott Hotel across the street, the television station reported.

Several theories have been advanced about why rain is lucky on a couple's wedding day. According to the Pink Bride website, rain signifies "fertility, cleansing, unity, renewal and tears."

According to The Knot website, the couple met at a dance. Seeking a place to sit because her feet were tired, Thompson asked Barnes if the seat next to him was taken.

“It is now,” Barnes said.

They have talked since, and Saturday they tied the knot despite the poor weather.

The Hindus believe that a wet knot is difficult to untie, according to the Solutions Bridal website.

If that’s the case, then these newlyweds can expect a long, happy marriage.
