Dunwoodians spotted their bear again Friday.
The black bear that has been roaming the area since last week was sighted around Dunwoody Club Drive and Mill Shire Lane, Dunwoody Police reported.
The cops advise putting up trash and eliminating any possible food sources so that the bear will not be enticed to stay in the area and will possibly head back to North Georgia. So far no hooligan behavior by the bear has been reported, cops said. They still advise residents to give any bear a wide berth.
The initial spotting last Thursday near Old Springhouse Lane prompted police to set up a perimeter at Chamblee-Dunwoody Road and Intestate 285 after the blue lights and sirens apparently spooked the omnivorous creature.
At the time police said the sightings could be pointing to two separate bears based on descriptions. As of Friday, there has been no solid report on whether Dunwoody has one bear or two bears in its woods.
The police called state rangers to deal with the bear or bears with the hope of relocation but soon learned from the Department of Natural Resources that they were to leave the bear alone.
“We’ve been in contact with DNR and have learned that trapping and or capturing the bear is not an option at this point,” police posted on the department’s Facebook page. “The bear is considered ‘free roaming’ and therefore cannot be trapped, tranquilized and relocated.”
