DeKalb County Board of Education Chairman Melvin Johnson said this morning the board acted on allegations that board member Marshall Orson was for Atlanta annexing part of DeKalb County, declining to say what action was taken.
Johnson, in a statement released while the district is in the middle of spring break, said the board met in executive session on April 1.
“Consistent with board policies and protocol, the board discussed the matter and acted in a unified manner,” Johnson said. “Since this is a personnel matter, details of the board’s actions will not be revealed. Based upon these actions, the board considers the matter closed. The board will continue to work together in a unified manner, committed to the welfare of all students in the DeKalb County School District.”
Annexation opponents filed open records requests that seemed to uncover Orson, both through his DeKalb County and his personal email, advocating Atlanta’s annexation of a portion of west DeKalb County, disenfranchising 3,000 students and shifting tax revenues to the city.
Board member Marshall Orson, at the time the emails were made public, denied advocacy, saying his emails were misunderstood.
