A 19-year-old Newton County man shot during a melee at a subdivision near Covington Monday night has died, authorities said.

No arrest warrants had been obtained as of Tuesday afternoon.

The body of Malik Muschett was sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputy Felicia Jefferson said in a press release issued Tuesday.

Deputies went to an address on Lakeside Circle off of Fairview Road at about 5 p.m. Monday, Jefferson said. They were told a group of men and women were in the yard of a residence and that a fight had occurred among some of the men, according to the release. During the altercation, gun shots were fired and Muschett was hit.
