A Kansas woman was thankful for the help of strangers Wednesday after they stepped in when a man approached her in a Walmart checkout line and began choking her 4-month-old daughter.

Quisha Hill told Fox 4 in Kansas City that she had gone into her usual Walmart store to pick up a few items and had her daughter with her, nestled into her car seat.

"I come in to grab a couple items and while I was at the counter top, speaking with the lady and bagging up my groceries, this random man comes out of nowhere and yanks the car seat out of the cart, has my baby, and he's like, 'I'm taking the baby, I'm stealing her. I'm taking her. Call 911. Call 911,'" Hill told the news station.

Hill said she screamed for help as the man began choking the baby. Shoppers in the store heard her pleas and wrestled the man to the ground, holding him there until police arrived.

He was taken into custody, but his name and details of the charges he might face have not been made public.

The baby turned red in the face from the choking, but was not seriously hurt, the news station reported. Hill said the man appeared to be under the influence of something and that, at one point, he put her daughter's car seat on his head like a hat.

Walmart issued a statement saying that store employees’ main concern is for Hill and her daughter.

"We're appalled this happened in our store, and we're working with police to make sure they have all the information they need," the statement read.
