A Henry County police officer is being investigated for allegedly attacking his wife, authorities said.

Stephen Andrew Martin, 27, was arrested on Dec. 2 and charged with domestic battery and two counts of cruelty to children, Newton County Sheriff’s officials said.

Authorities said Martin assaulted his wife in front of their two children.

“We got a call from his wife, and she had several bruises,” Newton Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Keith Crum told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Based on investigation, detectives had enough probable cause to arrest him under the domestic violence statute.”

Martin was released from the Newton County jail on Dec. 3 on $2,400 bond, according to jail officials.

He has been placed on unpaid administrative leave from the Henry County Police Department while an internal investigation is conducted, Henry police spokesman Sgt. Joey Smith said.
