A northwest Georgia mother was arrested Thursday after her 17-month-old daughter was dead in bed after a severe illness, police said.
Catarina Castro Moran, 21, told investigators her daughter got sick Wednesday, according to Bruce Frazier, spokesman for Dalton police. But the child, whose name was not released, was ill the prior week with a high fever, and Moran took her to the hospital, Frazier said in an emailed statement.
“Investigators also determined that Moran took the child to the hospital on Monday, but left without the child being treated after doctors told her that the child needed to be treated,” Frazier said.
Officers were called around 6 a.m. to a Whitener Drive home and performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived, but the girl did not survive. An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI crime lab, police said.
Moran was charged with second-degree murder, cruelty to children in the first degree, identity fraud and making false statements to law enforcement officers. She was being held without bond Thursday night at the Whitfield County jail.
