A driver and his mother have been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist in Clayton County.

On Sept. 4, Demosthenes Kostopapas Jr., 31, was killed when his 250cc Scooter was rear-ended on I-75 South near Bob White Trail, police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said Friday.

After an investigation, police charged Christopher Devante Walthall, 24, with vehicular homicide and other offenses, Marbury said. His mother, Sonya Evette Walthall, 45, was charged with tampering with evidence and insurance fraud.

Police determined the make, model and color of the car in the crash, a Honda, from evidence at the scene, Marbury said. They then found the dealer where Christopher took the Honda for repairs.

Christopher confessed that he was the driver that hit Kostopapas, Marbury said. He also is charged with improper lane change, leaving the scene of an accident and driving on a suspended license.

Sonya Walthall, who is the registered owner of the Honda, was charged based on her involvement in repairs to the car.

Both suspects are in custody.
