A Cobb County man allegedly left two pit bulls on his apartment balcony for more than six hours in 90-plus degree heat, killing one of the dogs, according to police.

Neighbors in the Parkview Apartments in Austell told Cobb police the dogs were left alone on the balcony, and an animal control officer was dispatched to the complex, an arrest warrant states. One dog, a 2-year-old brown and white female, had suffered a seizure, according to police.

“The dog ultimately died from heatstroke or overheating as detailed in a necropsy performed by the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine,” the warrant states.

A 3-year-old male dog survived being left outside on Aug. 2, despite temperatures that exceeded 94 degrees, according to police.

On Thursday, an arrest warrant was issued for the dogs’ owner. Robert Devontae Joseph was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony, and a misdemeanor charge of cruelty to animals, his arrest warrant states. The two dogs were left “without sufficient water, shelter and cooling for six hours,” the warrant states.

Joseph had not been booked into the Cobb jail early Monday afternoon.
