The GBI has opened a criminal investigation into possible employee misconduct at a Middle Georgia university, officials said Tuesday.

The state Attorney General’s office and the university system Board of Regents asked the GBI to begin the investigation at Fort Valley State University, GBI agent J.T. Ricketson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

He said the complaint was made by a student at the university. It’s his understanding that the regents were looking at another matter when they came across “possible criminal activity.”

"Right now, it’s all allegation," Ricketson told the Macon Telegraph. “We’ve made no arrests.”

No details were released about what the nature of the misconduct was or when it occurred. However, the school said a university employee was placed on administrative leave.

“We can confirm that the University System of Georgia is now conducting an investigation into this alleged employee misconduct, and an FVSU employee who is allegedly involved has been placed on administrative leave,” school spokesman Cedric Mobley said in a statement.

“We can also confirm that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Attorney General are involved and investigating whether criminal activity has occurred. With the investigation pending, we cannot comment further.”

Ricketson said he hopes to know more about the case soon.

“Right now it’s about interview strategies for agents to follow,” he said. “If (interviewees) give us ABC, we find ABC.”
