Smokey, a horse with the Atlanta Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit, wants you to follow him — on Twitter.
Posts on Smokey’s first day included: “What a day! I met a lot of people today in midtown and my twitter is off to a fast start! Help spread the word! Now for some hay!”
And it’s not all about @APDSmokey, who will dish about about patrolling beats and participating in festivals, parades and community events.
The police department is working to connect with citizens in new ways and recently joined Periscope, too. Live streams of special events are later added to the department’s YouTube Channel, according to Friday’s news release.
“We want to make sure that our citizens have multiple opportunities to engage with us,” Chief George Turner said in the release. “Social media is an ideal platform to increase our community outreach and share how Atlanta officers are fighting crime.”
